Installing SQL Server

Install Microsoft SQL Server WITH TOOLS from http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/us/editions/express.aspx

I SUGGEST YOU SELECT "MIXED MODE" OR "SQL SERVER AUTHENTICATION" WHEN INSTALLING.
Enterprise Manager fully supports Integrated (or "Windows Authentication") but it makes maintenance more difficult.

1) After installing, you will need to open a program called "SQL Server Configuration Manager", it looks like this:

2) Go to SQL Server Network Configuration->Protocols for SQLExpress->right click TCP/IP and go to properties.

It will look like this:

Make sure to change enabled to yes on this screen, then click on the ip addresses tab.  For each IP listed (IP1, IP2, etc) change active AND enabled to to yes.  Click OK.  Now right click TCP/IP and change its status to "Enabled".

Right click on "Named Pipes" and select "Enable".

3) Go back to the "SQL Server Services" area (the first picture I showed).  Right click on SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and select properties.  Go to the Service tab and change Start Mode to Automatic:

Click OK to save.

4) Now right click on SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) (like you did before) and select start.

5) Now repeat steps 3 and 4 for "SQL Server Browser" - change its startup type to "Automatic", then start it.

Assuming no errors come up, close this program.
